5.00 PM My cold still hangs on persistently. I went to the Dr. today he gave me a couple of pills and I went to the latrine about five times in two hours.

In addition to the Army officer that ran the camp, there could also be other Army service members. There is a good chance this was an Army doctor Robert went to see.
Doesn't sound like a good experience with the medicine.

Entry - September 5, 1936
4.00 PM I signed up for another six months in the c.c.c. today. I guess I will get home next April if I don’t run into any more forest fires like the last one. There were twenty accidents on the last fire.

This would be Robert's fourth term in the CCC. Once the journal ends, I don't have much record of where he went during this term. Something I have yet to do is request his records from the National Archives. This seems like an interesting service and if you have family members which were in the CCC you may want to try it out.

Entry - September 4, 1936
8.00 PM I am taking my days off from the fire now. I think that I will catch up on my letter writing on my time off.
It is rumored again that we are going to move to Salt Lake City Utah. I think that we will down on the west coast someplace myself.

I've found it interesting how closely some attributes of this year match up to 1936. Wildfire outbreaks have been one of those attributes.
2015 has been a bad year for wild fire in the western United States. You've probably seen many of these on the news and heard of firefighters losing their lives. Much like 1936, this year has been very dry and made conditions favorable for quick spreading fire.

8.00 A.M. Came back to camp today and a hot shower and a good bed sure does feel good. My cold seems to be getting worse instead of better. Went to Kalispell bell today and had a pretty good time.

Today must have been a great day for Robert. This is 13 days after he was called out on the fire. I always think a hot shower feels good after camping, but this must have been the best ever.

Entry - September 1, 1936
4.30 We went out to patrol the fire today to see that it doesn’t get away again.
It rained the thirtieth and that sure helped to get the fire under control.
We had to sleep the last couple of nights in a wet sleeping bag. All my clothes have been wet for the last two days so that I have a heavy cold.

Breathing all of that smoke probably didn't help with his cold.
This wasn't there at the time, but a fire lookout was built years later. One of the factors that contributed to size of the Heaven's Peak fire was there wasn't a good way to see what was happening in that part of the park. This lookout provided a spot where you could see that portion of the park and more readily address fires before they grow to the size of the Heaven's Peak fire.
It rained the thirtieth and that sure helped to get the fire under control.

Entry - August 31, 1936
8.00 The Heavens Peak fire busted loose again. They called out all of us from our camp and all from eight more camps so that we had about sixteen hundred men. This is August the 31st and we are in camp for two hours for our pay and right back out on the fire again. I have been seeing so many fires lately that I am sick of them and sometimes I think that I will go nuts being around them so much.
The fire has burnt over about eight miles of the parks beautiful scenery before we got it under control. It burnt up all the many glacier chalets and the museum and some of the beautiful bridle paths were burnt up.
We came back in the camp today on the thirty first of August.

Entry - August 28, 1936
9.00 P.M. All the fires seem to be out. They have had about 5,000 men working on twenty fires in the park. When you get near of a fire you see all the bear, deer, and birds leaving the territory.

Seven days in to the fire.
A wildfire like this typically doesn't kill many animals. They know how to get out of the area. Some of the predators even know how to catch other animals when they are escaping. This must be quite a feeling when everything in the woods is heading one way and you are going the opposite.
